CHAPTER EIGHT

BOXING DAY WAS a full and fun day. A day with the O’Reillys was not a day for introspection and gloom. After wearing themselves out playing road hockey, the teams came in and helped themselves to the mountains of food available. Michelle enjoyed being part of the group.

Then the hockey aficionados gathered around the TV to watch the World Junior hockey championships, cheering on Canada. Angie was in the thick of that, while Tommy went off with Bradley to play video games. Michelle helped clean up, despite being “company.” She finally dragged the kids away after dinner, everyone full of food and thanks.

It wasn’t hard to get the kids to bed. They’d been up early the past couple of days, wound up with excitement, and it was catching up with them. Michelle checked up on them after only a few minutes and smiled when she saw them sound asleep. It had been that way since they were born. They were completely lovable when they were asleep. For a while, there was nothing to worry about.

She didn’t want to watch TV, so she turned the music on low, dimmed the lights and opened the curtains to watch the city. It was calming. She rarely had moments to do nothing.

When she heard the quiet knock, she knew who it must be. She reminded herself that she needed to be sensible around Troy. As long as they kept things at the friend level everything would be fine...but when she saw him, she couldn’t hold back a smile.

Troy smiled back at her. “I hoped you might still be up.”

She opened the door to invite him in. “Drink?”

When he nodded, she went to the kitchen to get it for him. When she joined him, she saw he’d gone to the windows.

“I do this, too, sometimes. It’s hard to imagine how many other people are out there, all doing their own things, each little window another world.”

Michelle stood beside him and passed him the glass.

“Did you have a good day?” he asked her.

“The kids are down and out. That tells you all you need to know.”

Troy turned and looked at her. “What about you?”

Michelle took a moment. “Yes, it was good. They’re a nice group of people.”

“Do they really all have red hair? Reimer swears it.”

Michelle laughed. “Well, the parents’ hair is getting kind of gray, but the kids all do, and some of the grandkids.”

“Must be quite the family picture.”

“I don’t know if they could get everyone to stand still long enough to take a picture. They’re all hockey mad, too. How was your day?”

* * *

TROY HAD HAD a perfectly acceptable day. He’d gone out with some friends, had a nice meal, watched the World Juniors at a bar. But he’d been happy to head home. He wanted to set up a date for the aquarium visit with Michelle and the kids. So when she asked about his day, it took him a moment to remember what he’d done. He’d done nothing memorable.
